Fabu Pires
The concept of homeland and roots is a deeply personal and universally resonant theme that shapes our identities and influences our perceptions of the world around us. Under that central reasoning, Fabu Pires presents his exhibition "Syncretism".
The exhibition invites you to embark on a journey of appreciation and awareness of the values and richness of multiculturalism and the blend of cultural identities through the evocative works of Pires, an inventive artist whose artworks transcend the boundaries of geography and traditions. In a very particular way, this exhibition encourages viewers to reflect on deep questions involving concepts of diverse identities, cultural assimilation, otherness, and respect for ethnic differences, issues that the artist considers fundamental when Finland is debating contentious issues about immigration and racism.
Pires investigates the complex interplay between heritage and modernity through a captivating array of tapestries. Using weaving threads, he embraces his Brazilian roots and connects with Finnish influences to create a rich mosaic of interconnected themes. In addition to textile works, the exhibition features paintings that further expand upon the artist's exploration of cultural fusion and personal evolution and his response to negotiating the local and the cosmopolitan as opposites and interconnected notions.
Drawing on the artist's experiences of migration and adaptation to Finnish culture and society, each piece in the exhibition serves as a window into the soul, revealing layers of symbolism and emotion. Fabu Pires is highly skilled in combining a rich myriad of elements: human beings, philosophical tradition, real and imagined fauna, nature and landscapes, symbolic objects such as talismans and other emblematic icons taken from popular culture. The images depicted by Pires look like they are in constant mutation; shifting focus from one detail to the next, therefore inviting viewers to contemplate the countless ways in which cultures merge and transform in the individual and collective psyche.
Like a contemporary shaman or an avant-garde artist, Pires finds himself caught in a visual spiderweb system of influences, consequences, and sequels that only he can delineate and present to us in such an outstanding manner.
