"A Place in the Sun"

The exhibition "A Place in the Sun " invites you to embark on a journey of transformation through the lens of alchemy’s “Great Work,” a process that parallels spiritual purification. This transformation reflects an evolution from the material world to the spiritual realm. Traditionally, alchemists incorporated astrological symbols such as the Sun and Moon, as well as celestial figures like angels, to convey this journey. The artist represents some of these symbols through textile works in this exhibition.

In addition to the alchemical theme, Fabu draws on archetypes inspired by his studies of the "Armorial movement", led by the Brazilian artist Ariano Suassuna. This movement was rooted in Brazilian folk traditions and sought to create an erudite art form that expressed both the “material and spiritual conditions” of Brazilian identity—much like alchemy does. The exhibit not only highlights these shared themes but also explores the complex relationship between heritage and modernity, which resonates strongly in Fabu’s work today.

In a unique way, this exhibition encourages reflection on profound issues surrounding identity, especially as shaped by the “European Middle Ages” and its feudal social structures. These elements preserved distinct cultural characteristics that stand apart from the homogenised model of the modern Western world.
