Arete, a solo exhibition by Brazilian-Finnish visual artist Fabu Pires, presents a compelling body of paintings and textile works that reflect on the convergence of cultural heritage and contemporary identity. Drawing on his lived experience between Brazil and Finland, Pires constructs a symbolic visual language that fuses imagined fauna, human figures, landscapes, and iconic objects drawn from the popular cultures of both nations.
Executed in acrylic, oil, and oil pastel on canvas, alongside expressive textile works, the pieces articulate a richly layered narrative of transformation, memory, and belonging. With each composition, Pires explores the nuances of cultural hybridity, offering an introspective yet universally resonant meditation on otherness, migration, and the fluidity of identity in a globalized world.
This exhibition invites viewers to engage with themes of assimilation and representation through a personal yet critical lens, particularly timely in the current socio-political landscape of Finland. Through a synthesis of the personal and the collective, the local and the cosmopolitan, Arete challenges conventional notions of homeland and place, proposing instead a dynamic space of cultural interplay.
The exhibition opens on July 3, accompanied by a special acoustic performance by Brazilian musician Nei Zigma, who will present selections from his album Evocação Negreira, enriching the evening with soundscapes that echo the exhibition’s cross-cultural dialogue.
